In 2009 we caught up with the frogs a bit earlier than last year, and the population in the ponds is predominantly male, indeed, we only found one very small clump of spawn in the ponds on the 23rd February. There were certainly over a hundred males in the small area of the pond I was working, and still they were coming, crawling over the grass, and the brambles to reach the water. The noise is, as last year, considerable, and you could be forgiven for thinking it was someone riding a motorcycle away in the distance.

A week or so ago, the frogs were going mad down here in the Forest, and spawn was appearing on most ponds, even in my garden pond, for the first time. These frogs were at Nagshead Nature Reserve, and at one point I must have had 40 or more in front of me, and the noise they were making was considerable.
