Not a true fritillary, it's original name reflects the colouration and patterns on the wings, this little butterfly is becoming increasingly rare. It flies early in the year, in May, is single brooded and the larva feed on cowslip or primrose. Often found on chalk or limestone downland, it can also be found in the clearings and rides of ancient woodland. Principally found in the south and centre of England, there are outlying colonies in north Yorkshire and Lancashire.
