A glamour puss of a bird, the goldfinch brings a welcome splash of colour to the garden feeders. The top two shots were in mine, and the third in Ian Girton's amazing twisted willow tree, outside his kitchen window!
Two of the three shots below illustrate the value of growing wild flowers in your garden and leaving the remnants standing through the winter. These seed heads can be found adjacent to my garden pond in Gloucestershire, and have provided food to not just goldfinches, but also occasional bulfinches. (not that I've managed to photograph those!)

The first photograph I took of a bird in our new garden in 2010, this obliging goldfinch came and perched on the dead palm tree adjacent to my feeder station, enabling a level shot from my bedroom window.
